Irradiation of the secondary star in X - ray Nova Scorpii 1994 ( = GRO J 1655 – 40 )

چکیده
We have obtained intermediate resolution optical spectra of the black-hole candidate Nova Sco 1994 in June 1996, when the source was in an X-ray/optical active state (R ∼15.05). We measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary star and obtain a semi-amplitude of 279±10km s−1; a value which is 30 per cent larger than the value obtained when the source is in quiescence. Our large value for K2 is consistent with 60 −7 per cent of the secondary star’s surface being heated; compared to 35 per cent, which is what one would expect if only the inner face of the secondary star were irradiated. Effects such as irradiation-induced flows on the secondary star may be important in explaining the observed large value for K2.

The outburst radial velocity curve of X - Ray Nova Scorpii 1994 ( = GRO J 1655 – 40 ) : a reduced mass for the black hole ?
We present a reanalysis of the outburst radial velocity data for X-Ray Nova Scorpii 1994. Using a model based on X-ray heating of the secondary star we suggest a more realistic treatment of the radial velocity data. Solutions are obtained in the (K 2 , q) plane which, when combined with the published value for the binary mass ratio and inclination, constrain the mass of the black hole to within...
متن کاملThe Black Hole Binary Nova Scorpii 1994 ( GRO J 1655 - 40 ) : An improved chemical analysis ⋆
Context. The chemical analysis of secondary stars of low mass X-ray binaries provides an opportunity to study the formation processes of compact objects, either black holes or neutron stars. Aims. Following the discovery of overabundances of α-elements in the Keck I/HIRES spectrum of the secondary star of Nova Scorpii 1994 (Israelian et al. 1999), we obtained VLT/UVES high-resolution spectrosco...
متن کاملThe quiescence optical light curve of Nova Scorpii 1994 ( = GROJ 1655 – 40 ) ⋆
We report on extensive V, R, and i band photometry of the black-hole candidate Nova Sco 1994 (GRO J1655–40) obtained during March 1996, when the source was close to its quiescent pre-outburst optical brightness (V=17.3). From our observations and data taken from the literature we derive a refined ephemeris for inferior conjunction of the secondary star: HJD 244 9838.4198(52) + 2.62168(14)×N. We...
متن کاملThe quiescent light curve and evolutionary state of GRO J 1655 – 40
We present ellipsoidal light-curve fits to the quiescent B, V , R and I light curves of GRO J1655–40 (Nova Scorpii 1994). The fits are based on a simple model consisting of a Roche-lobe filling secondary and an accretion disc around the black-hole primary. Unlike previous studies, no assumptions are made about the interstellar extinction or the distance to the source; instead these are determin...
متن کاملThe 1996 outburst of GRO J 1655 - 40 : disc irradiation and enhanced mass transfer
We show that the 1996 outburst of the X-ray binary transient system GRO J1655–40 can be explained by the standard dwarf-nova type disc instability, followed by an episode of enhanced mass transfer from the secondary if the mass transfer rate in GRO J1655–40 is within a factor ∼ < 10 of the stability limit. We argue that irradiation of the secondary during the onset of the outburst driven by the...
